.cn domains and their second-level domain extensions

The domain extension .cn is the country-specific top-level domain (TLD) of the People's Republic of China and is one of the most popular and fastest growing domain extensions worldwide. In addition to direct .cn domains, domains with the second-level domain ending .com.cn, .net.cn, .org.cn and .tw.cn can also be registered. Industrial, commercial, financial and other companies often use the .com.cn domain extension for their Chinese websites in addition to the .cn extension.

To prevent domain grabbing and cybersquatting, simultaneous and early securing of the .cn and .com.cn extensions is usually recommended. Due to domain grabbing, these domain extensions are also frequently used for offering competitive products or Chinese fake products.

In principle, anyone can register Chinese domain names

The China Internet Network Information Center (abbreviation: CNNIC) administers the Chinese domain endings. Any natural person or company can order a Chinese .cn domain for any legal purpose, regardless of whether the company is based in Europe, in the US or in China.

A special feature of the Chinese domain registration is the submission of owner data for validation. The Chinese registry requires the following documents for proof of identity:

  • For a non-Chinese company: scan or photocopy of the trade license or the current extract from the commercial register. These documents must not be older than 6 months.
  • For companies based in Mainland China: currently valid Chinese business license or "Registration certificate of the representative office of foreign (regional) companies based in China".
  • For individuals: scan or photocopy of the front and back of the currently valid passport.

Special features of Chinese websites and domain names

Websites or web applications that are hosted in China must not contain defamatory, pornographic, violence-glorifying content or games of chance and the content must not violate Chinese principles. For Chinese domains, it must also be ensured that it does not violate any Chinese laws or Chinese censorship. According to Article 28, Content 3 of the China Internet Domain Name Regulations, since the beginning of 2021, the Chinese domain name may no longer contain the word "China", as this represents a violation of national honor and interest. The authority will refuse the application of such domain names. Likewise, the use of terms such as "central", "state", "people", "people's congress", "anti-corruption", "disciplinary inspection", "monitoring", "legal protection", "complaint" and "petition" in the domain name is prohibited.

The maximum length of 63 characters and a minimum length of three characters must be taken into account when registering the domain name.

For websites with the target market China or the target group Chinese, the following second-level domains under the .cn TLD can be used in addition to the .cn domain.

  • .com.cn (industrial, commercial, financial and other companies)
  • .net.cn (organizations that provide internet services)
  • .org.cn (non-profit organizations)
  • .tw.cn (Taiwan Province)

.cn domains and search engine optimization

The various .cn domain endings are particularly interesting for Chinese search engine optimization, as the leading Chinese search engine Baidu takes the TLD of a website into account for its rankings. It rewards the various Chinese .cn domains with a better ranking, which promotes the increase in brand awareness among the Chinese target group.

A .cn domain also ensures the user that the content of the website was created for Chinese users and that the content is tailored towards the Chinese market.
With a Chinese domain, users assume that the content is listed in their language, the sales prices are shown in the Chinese currency and the service times correspond to their working hours. Fulfilling these expectations increases trust in websites with a .cn domain.

A special feature of the Chinese domain hosting

Due to the Great Firewall of China, the physical location at which the web server is operated behind the website is another special feature for Chinese domain registration. If the domain points to a web server located on the Chinese mainland, a valid Chinese ICP registration or ICP license is required. Various requirements must be met in order to obtain and apply for them. weber.cloud China offers you hosting options directly in China and comprehensive support when applying for the ICP license.

If the hosting is implemented on a server that is located outside the Chinese mainland, only the company / personal data and the documents listed above for validation at the Chinese registry are required for the registration of the .cn domain.
